Why I’m Sweating with Pride
This pride month I’ll be taking part in Sweat with Pride to raise money for our rainbow communities! With some help from Poppy the pooch, I’ll be doing at least 21 minutes of exercise each day in June to fight discrimination with perspiration! 🏳️🌈💪🏻🏃♀️🚲
Despite significant progress, LGBTQIA+ rights are still under threat. Our schools, workplaces, and doctors’ offices are still not safe places for many rainbow folk. Our communities have the highest rates of suicidality compared with any other populations in Australia, and less than 50% of rainbow youth feel safe at school. Surgeries are still performed on intersex children and infants without their consent.
The situation overseas, particular in the UK and the US, sets a frightening precedent for the rights and safety of our transgender communities. People in power are using their platform to attack the rights, and endanger the lives of a vulnerable minority. The transgender community are being denied access to life-saving gender affirming care, and access to gendered spaces such as bathrooms. Trans women are being scapegoated for the crimes of predatory cis men. These transphobic campaigns are based on lies, misinformation and fear-mongering. Everyone deserves too pee in peace. No one deserves to live in fear just for being their authentic selves.
This attack on trans rights is made by a group who is loud and powerful, but they are few. We know that an overwhelming amount of people love and support the trans community. We must be louder. We must fight back.
This is why I am taking part in Sweat with Pride this pride month. I’ll be so grateful for any contribution you can make to show your support for the Australian LGBTQIA+ community. Please feel free to share my page, or get involved yourself and work up a sweat 💪🏻
